  1. OPTION 1:
    Learning Targets:
I can apply the skills of an investor by creating and maintaining an investment portfolio.

    Description:
Most people do not gamble in the stock market, but instead, invest in mutual funds. Mutual funds are professionally managed groups of investments that the manager chooses based on a specific objective. The objectives might be short-term or long-term and might seek growth or value, depending on the level of risk the investors are seeking.

Based on your investments in Marketwatch and your research in the markets, you are going to create a mutual fund with at least five equities. The goal of your fund is long-term growth, and you want to choose investments that will do well in a recession and even better in a recovery.

While it will be up to you which equities you choose, your mutual fund must meet the following criteria:

    - at least five stocks/bonds/ETFs/mutual funds at all times
    - performance history for your investments (via spreadsheet/graph)
    o overall earnings
    o most and least profitable
    - rationale for your investment decisions based on microeconomic and macroeconomic trends and the specific objective above (long-term growth)
    - future projections based on current trends

    Assessors:
Your mutual fund creations will not only be evaluated by Mr. Rochowicz, but also by professional money managers.

    Criteria:
    - 400-650 words for each investment
    - one chart or graph for each investment
    - eight sources total, cited with MLA format
    - Size 12 Font, double-spaced

    OPTION 2:
    Learning Target:
I can evaluate the business practices of four companies by creating a GOOD Guide. (Unit 2)

    Description:
As a consumer in the globalized economy, you are constantly buying products about which you know very little. Where were your sneakers made? Who harvested your apple? Who reaped the profits when you bought your French fries? Just like our Nike case study, you will research four companies to learn more about their business practices so you can inform consumers whether or not they should continue supporting this brand.

This project will ask you to evaluate four of the companies below based on their adherence to the “planet” and “people” aspects of the triple bottom line.

    The possible companies include:

Patagonia Ralph Lauren Ford Motors Coca-Cola McDonalds

    Adidas Wal-Mart Starbucks Monsanto Apple

You will create an informational pamphlet for each company that meets the following criteria:

    1) Include 500-600 words of text that include a short introduction to the company and its products/services and an explanation for the “grade” or “score” you give the company. Note: You should develop your own rubric and give scores based on that. Your rubric should be attached to the back of your pamphlets.
    2) Give the company a “grade” based on:
    - planet - environmental impact and sustainability
    - people - human rights, safety conditions, living wage
    2) Include one chart or graph that you create or cited from another source that adds to your information.
    4) Cite at least three credible sources.

Contributing Blog Post Due Dates: 4/18, 5/2, 5/16

    First Draft - 5/28
Final Draft and Presentations - 6/3 - You will be presenting your information to other students at WHEELS in the form of consumer education presentations.
