If you need support or have questions, my office hours are Monday and Wednesday from 3:15-4:15 in Room 229.
I am making a pamphlet that will instruct the young minds that not everything you see and hear is all the truth. For now i found Starbucks website and found that they don't explain their history or anything that has not been released to the media. It says that they give you roast and high quality whole grain beans. A part says learn about us but all it says is "We think these will help you understand us better" which shows that their hiding something more than what their telling us on their site. I want to find the hidden truth this organization hides from the public like how are the working conditions, do all your work have healthcare and labor freedom. All these questions go unanswered and I will find the true answer. I also looked up the coca-cola company and the information I found shows that in the coca-cola company, their the workers don't have labor laws protecting them, and i found an interesting bit that some how people from the factory have "MYSTERIOUSLY" disappeared and not found till later that month (if their lucky). This spiked my curiosity and brought up questions like, did they get rid of that person because he found out the truth?, did he try to quit and they told him no one quits the coca-cola company?, all these questions came up and i want to find the truth behind this. Are their real disappearances or just myths created to bring more publicity. That's my goal for the other two company's in mind. The truth will be revealed so all young will know a bit more of the truth this world hides form them.
ReplyDeleteIn our project we have to focus and research four companies, Wal-mart is one of them. In this project we have to grade them based on their planet which includes environmental impact and sustainability. I found a article that talks about Wal-mart’s sustainability named “Wal-mart to Save 150 million Thanks To Sustainability Programs”. This article was published on October 16th 2012 by Leon Kaye. In the article they mentioned that in their 50th anniversary meeting they announced how the company could save $150 million during the company’s 2013 fiscal year due to the numerous sustainability programs. The website where this article is from is called TriplePundit.com which is a new media company for the business community. This website prepares awareness and knowledge for the Triple Bottom Line. They provide news and discussion on sustainability business in the 21st century. Their leadership team are Nick Aster the founder and Publisher, Jen Boynton Editor in Chief, Travis Noland and Andrea Newell which are the Dic. Business Development Editor. Using the environment Walmart can and will increase the money they save up during their fiscal year. And they can also increase the number of sustainability programs they have. The size of Wal-Mart stores encourages the scale of more environmentally responsible products. For example there store in Brazil reduced the waste and cost by cutting bag use by about 50%. This means they’re spending less money on products that are being used everyday in the stores. 50% is a huge improvement because the bag products are being ordered in a large amount depending on the store size and will cost them less. In 2011 they saved $231 million by expanding waste diversion and recycling programs. They have a partnership with leading organization to make proper recycling of used electronics, they want to make it as convenient as possible for online customers. With this recycling program online customers can recycle Samsung consumer electronics.
ReplyDeleteOur project is to focus on four companies and learn more about subjects like health and sustainability .The article I read connects to my project because it is about McDonald's which is one of the companies that I am going to focus on. This text is credible because because it is from a well known news source which is the New York Times. It was founded in 1851 and has won 108 Pulitzer prizes, which is more than any other news organization.Stephanie Strom wrote this article and has worked for the paper since 1988. She was named a national correspondent for The New York Times in December 2002. This text is about McDonald's posting the calories on their menu. It was said that “The company also unveiled several menu additions aimed at making its offerings more healthful.” Adding healthier choices benefits the company because people who like to eat healthy food might consider eating there. It was also said that “McDonald’s, which has 14,000 locations around the country, is by far the largest chain to post calorie counts nationwide.” This causes people to be more satisfied with what they eat because they can decide how much they want based on the calories on the items. It can get people to buy less of the items and that could help with obesity. People want to know about the nutrition of their food and McDonald's say that they want to help with that. Sara Deon said that “The healthier options over all are little more than a vehicle for selling more of McDonald’s bread and butter — burgers, fries and soda.” She believes that McDonald's is doing this for public relations and not public health. Others believe that McDonald's is making a change in informing people how many calories they have on each item. Overall McDonald's is not a healthy option but they are trying to make improvements so that people would not stop buying their products.

I will be making a pamphlet from different companies one of them is Mcdonald's a place that everyone goes , i will share information about the business how it works. As i found in Mcdonald's website they explain their history as well-known place for fast food , they also do not share many details about their history. The company talks about how to improve themself more everyday , they also talk about their mission and how the business is growing. In their website they say we help the people with our service and the people help us to make a better communties and business . Im still not clear enough on their idea because it seems that the company is hiding things to us the customers. I also found an article that talks about Mcdonald's sustainable named " Doing more with less'', is that Mcdonald's company uses less energy , less emissions and also less waste, they also believe that cutting all waste is good for their long- term financial success.

The article that I chose includes two names that are part of my investments. This text connects to this week’s topic because this week I have started in the project that included investments. The people that are also in this project all start with $10000 and with that try to make money by investing with big companies or lose money with them. We are learning how investments work out and how you must be prepared daily for any major changes.
ReplyDeleteThis source is credible because it comes from a well-known newspaper company. As a powerful company and a company that is known for having the latest news report of the city and the world as well, it comes from New York Times. New York Times started since 1851 and since, they have expanded and delivering what the people want to hear daily with there daily news article.
The article talks about two of my main big businesses that I have invested in. The article mentioned coca cola and Johnson and Johnson are two big companies to invest this week since they have been improving this whole week. Especially since coca cola is a large soft drink maker and has few competitions but coca cola has increased because of the new bottles that have been distributed around the country. It seems to capture most of the consumer’s attention and that would be great for investors. Then for Johnson and Johnson there’s no specific detail that they mention why they have increased but they mentioned briefly that is for the health of the people and many baby products. What I have been noticing that many of the great investors see the newspaper to see any companies that would benefit them. Also to see better changes that you can do, is to know more about the company and see what they are doing that would lead to a bigger profit and increasing the market. Also as investors to have some prior knowledge and have some intelligent guess and think what days seem to be good for your product. The article not only showed the good companies but as well the companies that has done bad and has decreased. One takeaway from this is that the best way to see if any investment could be great is by checking out useful sources like the newspaper. The article that I found has helped me out a lot and has taken me to fist place.

ReplyDeleteThe article chosen called “How Wal-Mart is Creating a Meaningful Workplace” by Beth Cabrera connects to my research project because I would like to focus on the company Wal-Mart, its history, people’s reactions towards this company, and its environment. This text is credible because on the article, it has a separate section based on a description of the author, Beth Cabrera. For example, it states the following, “Dr. Cabrera joined the George Mason University Center for Consciousness and Transformation as a Senior Scholar in 2013”. This demonstrates one of the steps Cabrera has led to in order to get to the path she is currently in at the moment. The small biography also mentions that Cabrera lives in the Washington D.C. area with her husband and their two children. The following article based on the idea of Wal-Mart describes how Wal-Mart is an excellent place where customers are being received with satisfaction. Wal-Mart engages the customers into spending because the more new ideas are inserted into the business, the more customers would like to try out and discover the new things that are brought into Wal-Mart. Therefore, new ideas brought into businesses will engage and catch individuals’ attention. Similarly, Cabrera mentions the following, “People who work at Wal-Mart can feel proud that the company they work for is adopting initiatives that have the potential to greatly improve our planet and our society”. This summarizes the fact how initiatives are taking place in businesses in order to engage more customers, which also meant more consumer spending will occur. Overall, every individual learns something new in order to improve a specific purpose or idea. This is the reason why the learning that is discovered every day should be adapted to your work life, specifically. No one may never know if you can definitely make a great improvement to your focus ideas and goals.
On this project we have to research four different companies. One of the companies I’m interested in reading more about is Apple since its been such a sensation for the past years till now. One of the things I wanted to know more about was working conditions. On my looking I found this article called “Apple Poor working conditions inside Chinese factories making iPads.” In this article I found that workers are forced to stand for 24 hours in toxin exposure and explosions even occurring inside these factories while the Chinese are working. These workers have to face these horrible conditions; Working excessive overtime without a single day off during the week, living together in crowded dorms and exposure to dangerous chemicals, two explosions in 2011 in China 'due to aluminum dust killed four workers, and almost 140 injured after using toxin in factory. These workers don't have a day off, and people committing suicides. The workers have such a big stress on them that they are getting mentally sick and committing suicides. The FoxConn company in China had to put suicide nets outside the companies because workers were just jumping off. This Article is from Daily Mail is a website that contains new worldwide and its also affiliated with the New York Times. Apple has only cared about the quality of their product increasing and decreasing production cost. These workers are unskilled workers who work on assembly lines 24/7. Of Course the production cost is low because they pay them minimum wage to work in these poor conditions in which workers are getting harmed. I'm sure the consumers will be very disturbed to know where their product is been made at and how the people that are creating these products suffer.

The article I chose is "Apple factory inspections turn up scores of labor violations" by Phillip Elmer-Dewitt.
This article reviews Apple's annual Supplier responsibility report and it appears apple has labor violations to explain. Upon reading the article, I discovered of the 156 companies in the far East ,108 or roughly 70% of them did not their employees overtime properly9cnnmoney) and 93 facilities had records that indicated more than 50 percent of their workers exceeded weekly working hour limits of 60 in at least 1 week out of the 12 sample period(cnnmoney). This articleif from the credible website CNNmoney. Cable News Network (CNN) is a U.S. cable news channel founded in 1980 and upon its launch, CNN was the first channel to provide 24-hour television news coverage(wikipedia)Based on this article, it can be said that Apple has its factories in far foreign countries in order to abuse workers and limit their costs. supporting this is •In 5 facilities it discovered a total of 6 active and 13 historical cases of underage labor. In each case, the facility had insufficient controls to verify age or detect false documentation(cnnmoney) 67 facilities used deductions from wages as a disciplinary measure(cnnmoney)

ReplyDeleteOur project in econ class is to look at four companies and their past history. One of the companies i'm investigating is Apple and how are the working condition for it workers overseas. The Article i found is Work Conditions said to Improve at Apple Supplier by REUTER in The York Times a major news outlet for New York since 1851. In this reading the Foxconn (one of Apple's suppliers for manufacturing Apple products) quotes “overtime hours had been cut to 48 to 60 hours a month, from some 80 before”. Apple, the world’s most valuable company with a net worth over 500 billion is exploiting their workers by adapting long work hours and overtime hours in factories across sea. This is one of the reasons Apple has factories overseas because they are able to adopted unfair work hours and pay their labors low wages making over “$400,000 in profit per employee.” As a result of cheap production of their labor they are able to produce large quantities of their products and charge low prices for them. Considering the large worth of this company and the amount of profit it makes from their workers it should at least consider to provide better working condition for it workers overseas.
The article i found was “China, the Sweatshop” which talks about how the Chinese works don't want sweatshops in china because they want higher wages and better working conditions. This article relates to my project because I’m going to look deeper into the apple production and seeing things the company doesn't tell us or show us and this article shows me. The article is credible because it comes from the New York Times a high, much known company that won't lie about their information and has many hyperlinks connecting to other stories. As stated in “China, the Sweatshop” Worker unrest has spread after reports of suicides at two campuses in southern China owned by Foxconn Technology, an electronics maker that employs 800,000 people in China who assemble products and parts for Western companies, including Apple, Dell and Hewlett-Packard”. Chinese people are getting tired of working in sweatshops that they even taking their lives and at the end of the day they are the ones working hard to produce these product we all use today and aren't rewarded as they should be. “At the Pingdingshan Cotton Textile Company, The Toronto Star reported, workers make 65 cents an hour, working grueling two-day shifts, often in 100-plus degree heat”. This relates back to when industrialization started when Ford Company would pay the workers $2.38 for a 9 hour work day just now the Chinese have poor working conditions and get paid only 65 cents for a product that you need specialized skills for. Which they should be getting paid way more than just 65 cents. “Rising wages and better working conditions are essential for China to become a more self-reliant economy, powered by domestic consumption. Until it treats its workers better, it has no chance of becoming a just and stable society”. China can raise the wages for the Chinese workers but if they not willing to is a different story, china needs to stop believing in sweat shops and make a change for the poor Chinese workers suffering and committing suicides.
ReplyDeleteThe article that I found this week was a press release on the law suit filed against Coca-Cola and Panamerican Beverages, Inc. The article described the case against these companies stating that Panamerican Beverages, Inc., the primary bottlers of Coca-Cola in Latin America, is being held responsible for the murder of labor union leaders. The company has been linked to having close relationships with murder squads in Columbia and has been called one of the most notorious employers in Columbia. This text connects to my research project because this looks into the ‘people’ aspect of the triple bottom line in the Coca-Cola Company. The text goes on to explain the violation of human rights that Coca-Cola is causing to the labor union, specifically the leader of the labor union. Daniel Kovalik, the Assistant General Counsel of the Steelworkers and co-counsel for the plaintiffs said, “This case is extremely important for trade union and human rights. If we cannot get Coke, one of the most well-known companies in the world, to protect the lives and human rights of the workers at its world-wide bottling facilities, then we certainly have a long way to go in making the global economy safe for trade unionists,” Labor union leaders were subjected to torture, kidnapping, or unlawful detention in order to encourage them to stop their labor union activities.
ReplyDeleteFor this project we need to research for different companies and create an informational pamphlet to inform people that everything they know about a company is not true, or that they only tell you what they want you to know which would be just the good part of the company so they won’t lose customers. One of the companies that I would be talking about is Coca-Cola. In the Coca-Cola website it talks about their history and how they have “126 years creating happiness” but not how union leader became “missing” out of nowhere. Union leaders would be killed, tortured abducted or threatened with death. These workers faced dangerous working condition and human rights abuse every time they would go and work. Which brings up question like what is the reason behind all these people going missing. Some workers are even getting paid fewer wages just because they are afraid that they might be killed. Which lets us know that the Coca-Cola Company is hiding things and probably still is hiding, things that they don’t want people to know. I would like to know not only what Coca-Cola has to say but also what other credible sources have to say. Coca-Cola and other similar companies only talk about giving the best quality and what would make buyers continue buying by saying things like that they would be using different materials so that they can be sustainable. But this is mainly just for publicity to keep the conversation about them and not about their competition. With this pamphlet and three others I will inform people about the good and the bad of the company that people love so much.
ReplyDeleteThe Article “After Apple’s Rise, a Bruising Fall” by Nathaniel Popper and Nick Wingfield relates to this weeks project on investments. Starting with $10,000, students have to buy stocks from companies and hope that the company does well so they can get money in return. If the company doesn’t do well, the student will lose money. This project is to help students know how the stock market works and how to invest at the right time.
ReplyDeleteIn the article, Popper and Wingfield wrote about Apples downfall in the stock market that explains my current downfall investing in Apple. For the project, I invested in Apple at the price of $424.46 for 1 share on Monday. However, according to the article “Only seven months ago, Apple’s share price raced above $700 to a record high, making Apple the most valuable company on the planet. By Thursday, the stock had sunk to $392.05, closing below $400 for the first time since late 2011.” This explains why my total returns dropped, and so I sold Apple as soon as possible. Although, Apple remains “enormously profitable”, the value of Apple is slowly decreasing in the stock market, questioning investors whether to invest or not.
This article is credible because its published from the New York Times, a prestigious news source that is well known to publish reliable news from Business, Arts, Science, Sports, and more.

The article I read this week is "Apple investigates 'sweat shop' factories following sucide theeat" by Nathalie Thomas. This reading connects to my research project because Apple has been the dominant company in thr market with their latest modern phone or computer. Consumers rush to get Iphones or Ipads when they come out and even give money to people thats on the line so they can get the device first. Yes this is a great thing for the market itself but do consumers ever stopped and think about the condition the people that made this works in or the suicide rate increasing in the process of the devices being made? A high rate of suicide has happen in Japan sweatshop 300,000 to 400,000 to be exact where all the famous Iphones and Ipods are made. The working condition is horrible , they dont get pay much and there break is not even worth calling a break. The Telegraph Media Grop has been around for a long time , Telegraph updates there news constantly and even havr credible news around the world. This website even has a contact place where you can call them and ask question. Telegraph is connected to the social media such as Twitter and Facebook people even share stories from Telegraph using there social network accounts. In the article it states that " 150 foxconn employees have threatened to leap from the top of a three floor plant in Whan amid allegations they were paid piecemeals and were expected to work in a pressured enviorment without any trainning". Workers shouldnt be forced to work at something they dont know what to do is not right and because of it a high rate of suicide has happen. This statement could compare to the article we readed in class about workers like Maddie being replace because they dont havr the skill to work in there jobs but here in Japan they obviously dont care thry put you to work no matter if you know the skill or not. I believed that the whole caused of workers suicide themself is the pressure owners put on them and the horrible working condition itself. There something worth thinking about the next time you purchase a Apple device how many people it took to make or life taken away by no other choice because of horrible working conditions.
ReplyDeleteOn the project that I have chosen I have to do further research for 4 companies on how they really not as good as they promote themselves. Not good as in the product quality but not being good either to the earth or to the workers who make the products that we purchase. Ralph Lauren is a brand that’s has been around for a long time and it’s popular in our community. Although a lot of people buy clothing and other items from this brand, no one really knows the employees are treated. I found an article that’s call “sweatshops are still supplying high street brands” by Madeleine Bunting. This article is relevant to my project because in the article the author explains to the reader some of the bad working condition Ralph Lauren puts their workers to work on. She also explains how some workers are not given full working contracts. They are hired to work one day or a week. This prevents them from having any type of benefits such as getting paid when they sick. They are also forced to work for long hours without getting paid over time. These are poor working conditions that a lot of the consumers that purchase Ralph Lauren are not aware of. The text that I found is credible because “The guardian “is a news source from the United kingdom that also has a United States website. This news page is a website that updates daily with articles about sports, money, culture, world, science, tech and many more. The author Madeline Bunting has been working for the guardian since 1989, she also study politics in Harvard university and was awarded the one world trust award in 1999. This idea of abusive sweatshops was very common in the industrial era but we have to realize that as long as big companies move their factories to other countries this abuse is always going to exist. Companies care about making profit and they know that If they have factories in the united states their profit won’t be as high because there is not a lot of workers that are willing to work under poor conditions. Workers in the United States world demand at least minimum wage. As long as foreign countries don’t support workers rights, companies such as Ralph Lauren would constantly keep on abusing workers and they would keep on making millions of these innocent people who just want a job.

ReplyDeleteThe article that I read "Google Glass Is Up For Sale On eBay Again. Buyer Beware" by Kashmir Hill. This article is about the new Google glasses that are soon to be release and make a huge impact in the world and in the market. It's also about how the glasses are not even being sold put went up to a high $92,000 on eBay when the original price for the glasses is $1,500 which you can see that there's a high demand for these glasses. This text connects to my project because I'm going to invest in Google and this article shows that is a good time to invest in Google with the glasses soon to be released and a high demand for the glasses shows that Google's stocks are gonna increase.
ReplyDeleteThe text that I found is from Forbes.com a well reliable source that talks about what is going to impact the market and is also the leading source for reliable business news and financial Information. Kashmir Hill is a writer for Forbes since August 2010 writing about law, technology and the social media.
With Google making new inventions and a net worth of $263.7 billion it is soon to increase and its profit and revenue bringing in more money for them and also the investors. Google invested money in order for them to to make money and looking at this is seems that Google did make a smart choice on investing in the glasses. Due to the $92,000 offered eBay for the glasses it seems that there's a high demand for a $1,500 pair of glasses that are not release yet. This would spark Google’s net worth and old put more money in the investors pockets. There's a major difference in the price of the glasses which is $1,500 on the official release date and $92,000 for early this shows that the future of Google is looking bright and is soon to increase its market net worth due to the new innovations.

I will be making a pamphlet for 4 companies to see were they get there products how they make it and how there company is good to have in our environment. Some companies i have in mind are Adidas, Coca cola, Sony , and Microsoft. I decided to pick these companies because i feel that they are big companies that we see in our environment daily and have big affects in our society. The link i found talk about how big companies say they help the environment but when you look closely they also create pollution by inventing new products. This was a interesting point because even though they say they doo all these good things they dont really say that they have major affects in our society by having new product or more specifically for the coca cola companies that they use plastic bottles that they say over time just become dust but how long those it takes?. I did more research on that and it take many years for a plastic bottle to evaporate as they say it will but in the mean time they polluting our oceans and food resources.
ReplyDeleteOn our project we are going to focus on researching four companies, which ever we want, one of them I choose was Target. In this project we are going to be graded on the pamphlets we create for the four companies we creating which includes environmental impact sustainability and supply chain. The article I found is credible because its branched from referenceforbusiness.com, which is a highly trusted website. Referenceforbusiness, is read all around the world is every important website everyone likes to read it and get updates about everything like big businesses. This article talks about other competitors it has and how much of a difference their pricing is in their store and how fordable their prices are for consumers and low income families. This store target it's a great store for low income families that could spend on demands in target because its at a price that is a fordable. In the article it's stays "In the retailing industry, Dayton Hudson won praise for its smart management style. It made Mervyn's a "soft-goods" store, selling mostly clothing at prices cheaper than department stores, but with better quality than the clothes sold at most discount". Target is trying to have the lowest prices they can have so consumers would spend more money. Which this is why they want more jobs opening so workers as consumers could make more money and spend more money. Should target have these fordable prices and such cheap prices. Well yes because target it's a great store to help low income family or just anyone to buy food, clothes and much more. Many people can't buy expansive things which they don't have the money for so that's why target has great pricing cause they know alot of consumer are going to shop at target cause they could get pretty much everything sell around for a cheaper price. Target has become a very good help for customers that like to spend money and get all new technology or just things they want.

I choose to write on two articles, one of which focuses on the shift location of Apple production and the shifts of jobs. The other is on the suicide rates in Apple factories overseas in China. These articles are, "In Shift of Jobs, Apple Will Make Some Macs in U.S" by Nick Wingfield and "Revealed: Inside the Chinese suicide sweatshop where workers toil in 34-hour shifts to make your iPod" by Richard Jones. Both texts connects to my project because each article are relevant to both the people and job markets. Each article focuses on the prodcution of Apple products and how labor is forced to create these inventions. Wingfield's article is credible because it was published by the New York Times, a newsprint coorperation that has been around since it's establishment in the late 1800's. Ever since then the New York Time has been providing fine news to viewers around the globe. Jones article was published by Mail Online a news industry runned by Glam Entertainment a organization ran in the United Kingdom. In Jones article he shares how the working conditions in Apple factories lead to employees commit suicide. Wingfield's article states how Apple now seeks to move many of their factories from China into the United States. Since the suicide has become a problem overseas in China, Apple is looking to eliminate that problem by relocating some of their factories within the States. If I were the head of Apple I would agree on this plan as well since with the relocation of factories new jobs would be created and established for the American people which would benefit the economy.
ReplyDelete1. The article I found is call "Starbucks Buys Coffee Farm in Costa Rica" by DailyFinance Staff. Starbucks is one of 4 business that I want to evaluate about the products. This article connects to my project because Starbucks bought a coffee farm in Costa Rica and that helps me know more about where they get their coffee. The coffee retailer has bought its first farm a 600-acre property in Costa Rica. Starbucks Corporation is a roaster, marketer and retailer of coffee operating in 60 countries. This article gives us information about one place where Starbucks get their coffee. The Company purchases and roasts coffees that it sells, along with handcrafted coffee, tea and other beverages and a variety of fresh food items, through Company-operated stores. Starbucks has all this products and more and we don't know where they form and how they make them. In my project I need to find how they make them and where they get their material to make them.
ReplyDelete2. The article "Starbucks Buys Coffee Farm in Costa Rica" came form DailyFinance. DailyFinance help people start the conversation to make smarter decisions about their money. We believe that living a better life financially depends on having a plan for every dollar people choose to spend, save or invest. There commitment to people is to provide the best tools and information to create that plan and then make it work for you. DailyFinance brings together some of the industry's top experts on finance, business news and analysis. They want help you live a better life financially.
3. Starbucks hopes its move into agriculture will benefit the entire coffee-growing business. Starbucks already offers 55 different varieties of coffee. And now that the company has its own farm, it will be able to develop proprietary coffee varietals, which could lead to new blends. Starbucks will also develop hybrid coffee beans, but it will not use genetic modification techniques. That's part of the company's commitment to ethically source all of its coffee beans by 2015. Starbucks has more than 17,000 coffee shops in many different countries. So how much coffee does it need to meet our thirst for these coffee brews? It bought 545 million pounds of coffee last year. This shows that many people like to consume the coffee that Starbucks has.
4. Starbucks says it intends to use the new farm as a basis of research that will help coffee farmers around the world. One of their focus is to investigate a fungus, known as leaf rust, that is devastating crops in Central America and Mexico. It kills coffee leaves by sapping them of nutrients and lowers bean yields. An international trade group estimates the fungus could wipe out 2-1/2 million of those giant bags of coffee this year, and as much as 4-million bags next year. Starbucks also says its research will focus on finding new methods to grow coffee, on farming techniques that improve coffee production, and on mitigating the impact of climate change. The company says it will share what it learns with other coffee farmers to improve the quality and size of the worldwide harvest. Starbucks company's stock has been a winner, even though growth has slowed. It's up just 6 percent over the past year, but it's more than doubled over three years, and it's soared 250 percent over five years.

Sonic is an American fast food drive-in. There is also the in store option if you don't have a car. Sonic is a drive- in and not a drive- thru. A drive-in means that you park your car in your own spot and order you food with no line. At Sonic you press a red button when you are ready to order, a person takes your order and then a carhop delivers your food on skates. You never have to leave your car and you are able to eat on your own time. Sonic is a supporter of animal welfare. Sonic also participates in blood drives for the American Red Cross and highway trash pickups. In April of this year a Sonic Drive-In in Oregon installed the company's first solar electric system. If the system works as planned, Sonic plans to add the solar electric system to more locations. Adding more solar electric systems will help the company and the environment be sustainable.

McDonald's is a fast-food industry that has been around since the 1940's. Since then this company has grown significantly and has become a $27.56 billion company. When evaluating this fast food chain, using the triple bottom line, the customer has the opportunity to learn more about this restaurant and its contribution to the environment, the customer themselves and their own profits. For decades, McDonald's has been targeted for being some kind of catalyst for the increase in obesity throughout the states and for using too much plastic or polystyrene packaging that is thrown out after being used for a few minutes. Considering the number of people they serve daily, 68 million in 119 different countries, the exorbitant amounts of plastic and polystyrene packaging begins to accumulate in landfills around the world because they simply aren't or cannot be recycled.
Upon reading "McDonald's Contribution to Recycling" by John Holusha in the New York Times, I came towards the assumption that McDonalds has now become more aware of the daily consequences they inflict upon society and the environment and has decided to use their ample revenue in order to fix those problems.
John Holusha, business reporter in an American daily Newspaper founded in the 1850's called The New York Times, unveils McDonald's effort towards adjusting themselves in order to better the environment that encompasses all of society.
Holusha announced that McDonald's decided to invest "$100 million in recycled construction materials for use in building and remodeling its fast-food restaurants" in hopes of creating a place that is much more sustainable rather than wasteful. McDonalds efforts have given customers the benefit of having a healthy meal, with a selection of new healthy options on the menu, and the choice to recycle when they are finished. With this invested the Triple Bottom Line business report for McDonald's would be enhance to being an industry who has helped unclog landfills, and increase recycling, made aimed to offer healthier options, and still continues to be a successful billion dollar company.
In our own project I am focusing on ford motor company because its a very known car company for many years and its the first cars to come out in the United States. The text I chosed is called “For Ford, Three Years Of Profit in a Row” and shows us the change and amount of money the company is getting. I thought this text would be relevant to my project because it shows me how the past three years the company has been making money which means they are being successful and By doing Ford motor company it would help me learn more about their business. The text i found is credible because it is coming from the New York Times, And the New York times won’t give us false information because it would ruin their reputation and then people won’t believe anything they say and is also coming from Nick Bunkley who is a journalist for the New York times. Ford Motor Industry would increase production if factories increase job production since the Ford motor company has been increasing in revenue. As you see “Revenue increased 13 percent to $136.3 billion, but profit margins declined to 5.4 percent, from 6.1 percent in 2010.” This would be a main reason to employ workers so that more cars could be produce. A problem that resulted was that “North America in 2011 of $6.2 billion but lost a total of $119 million in its Europe and Asia-Pacific-Africa regions. Its fourth-quarter loss in Europe nearly quadrupled to $190 million, from $51 million in 2010”. Which ment that out sea sales for ford was losing and wasn’t producing as well as here in the United States. But ford past has lead to a better future for the world now and worldwide. The ford Company “With the auto market in the United States improving, Ford said it expected operating profit to increase in 2012 and for profit margins to be equal to or better than in 2011” means that they are going to be more successful than then ever.

ReplyDeleteThe source connects to my research project because BHLB is one of the many companies I had invested in and it is one of the top companies in its category. The reason I choose this company is because doing some research online not knowing what to invest into this one came up as good investment choice. In Market Watch I saw everything was green and thought to myself it was indeed a good thing to invest in.
My source credibility can be measured by its publisher Zacks which gives reports and analysis on the latest companies and market summaries. So we can conclude the publisher know what they are talking about in the article. The article is under Yahoo Finance which ensures that their information is safe and reliable in order to ensure that their own credibility isn’t questioned. Yahoo also provides information in other sections like current trends, sports, global news etc. so they constantly make sure everything they publish is trustworthy.
Based on the article I would argue that BHLB is the one of the best companies to invest in. The article stated “Earnings momentum for Berkshire Hills Bancorp Inc. (BHLB) has been advancing since this savings and loan holding bank posted 34.3% year-over-year earnings growth in the second quarter of 2012. Shares have been showing an uptrend since June. Achieving a Zacks #1 Rank (Strong Buy) on August 21 and possessing a P/B multiple of just 0.91, this stock is an attractive pick for value investors.” Usually a low price to book ratio would mean the stock is undervalued or something is wrong with the company but that is not the case here and BHLB has earned rank #1 in possessing the highest. The company also has other attributes like “a forward P/E ratio as low as 11.6 (a P/E ratio under 15.0 and P/B ratio below 3.0 generally indicate value). In addition, it currently enjoys a robust dividend yield of 3.07%” which means the company is offering a steady income to its workers according to the article. The company overall doing well and its workers receiving a fair pay were the deciding factors at the time for me to invest in this company and currently it’s doing well still.

McDonalds is a fast food company that has been serving their customers since the 193
0’s. McDonalds company is a very successful international fast food company that has only propelled throughout the years and now stands at a whopping $27 billion company. Triple bottom line is used to evaluate companies and corporations to see their contributions to community. McDonalds has recently been facing accusations of being contributors to the increase of obesity in America and other countries that serve McDonalds fast food, McDonalds has also been accused for using excessive plastic and other harmful materials for packaging. After reading the New York Times article “McDonald’s Plastic Recycling Plan” by John Holusha , he states the McDonalds is working on a plan to influence customers to recycle by removing plastic packages when disposing their trash. “This is the first time that McDonald's has become involved in a large-scale recycling effort” and this is one method McDonalds plans use to contribute more to the environment. The New York Times is a news corporation that was founded in the 1850’s making it reliable to research.
The article I read “ Sustainability for all: Three cheers for McDonalds” by Leslie Back relates to the research project because it comparing to major factors of the triple bottom line social and ecological, for McDonalds. The article talks how McDonalds has a social responsibility to become more eco- friendly. The article is correct, McDonalds is a major corporation with a large audience and also reaches a demographic that environmentalist companies do not reach. If the McDonalds corporation did take the responsibility to become more eco- friendly it would have a huge affect of the ecology of the world. Since McDonalds is a major chain , other corporations such as McDonalds, will follow their steps in order to be able to compete and stay relevant. The triple bottom line captures the over all measurements of a corporations success: economic, ecological, and social. This article covers all three of these topics. If McDonalds becomes greener then that would make them seem more socially aware , this will thus make them more gain more economic success. This article is credible because its from the website www.triplepundit.com , a contemporary new - media website for the business community cultivating knowledge and awareness of the triple bottom line. They provide expert editorial coverage, news and discussions on sustainable business in the 21st century. They cater to a diverse group of business people who are committed to improve the triple bottom line. The author Leslie Back is a Donor Relations manager at The Nature Conservancy. The Nature Conservancy is a charitable organization that works to preserve all the lands and waters that all life depends on.
ReplyDeleteThe article I found is called “China, the Sweatshop” and the author discusses how workers in China are being underpaid and have working conditions that are unsafe for people to work in. This connects to my research project because several large companies go overseas to countries like China where workers rights are abused and get payed very few. One of the 4 companies I will be researching on is Apple which have overseas Chinese sweatshops that also share conditions like these where workers that work in those factories have even committed suicide because the working conditions are that bad. Not many people are aware of the things that happen overseas. This article is credible because its from a well known news organization called “The New York Times” which has been around since 1851 and has been providing New Yorkers with reliable information till now. It has also won 112 Pulitzer prizes, which is more than what any other news organization has received. According to the article, prime minister Wen Jiabao told labor workers at a subway in Beijing that the government and society “should treat migrant workers as they would their own children.” Meaning that the workers should be treated much better of what they are being treated like now and that factory owners and the government should have more consideration for them in terms or working conditions, wages, number of hours they work etc. For example, the Apple companies moved their factories overseas so that they would have to spend as much money paying workers. Laborers in China are payed much less than minimum wage, they are payed at about $1 a day or sometimes even 65 cents according to the article. Many of the workers also working 2 day shifts with weather that is 100 degrees or higher, which makes the situation even worse for laboring workers. “Too much of the country’s prosperity has been absorbed by companies’ profits. Too little has gone to workers.” Companies that have millions of dollars are basically too stingy to pay their workers a decent amount of money. They are overworked and are not even paid enough to support their families and some workers even decide to commit suicide because of their working situation. If companies like Apple were to have their companies in the U.S they would have much less money because they would have to pay their workers at least minimum wage which far more money than what overseas workers get paid and would result in the company having less money. In order for China to become a more self-reliant economy, better working conditions and higher wages are essential in order for that to happen.
ReplyDeleteThe New York Times article that I have found is called “Why Apple Got a ‘Made in U.S.A.’ Bug” by Quentin Hardy. This article is about how the Apple company is going to bring back some of its company to back to the United States of America to produce some of its computers. In the article Hardy talks about how companies such as Dell where once in the U.S, around 2006 to 2010, and then shut down, so this shows that even though Apple knows that there's a good chance that they will have to shut down their company in America they're still going to bring some of their businesses back. They are thinking about the American people and the U.S economy by creating more jobs with this choice. This is a text from the New York Times a worldwide known news organization that if they give false news will result in a decrease in supporters. Even if Apple is bringing some of its factory(s) back to the United States, it is only going to do little to no help for unskilled workers. “As more robots are built, largely by other robots (Hardy 1).” The need for unskilled workers are being replaced by machines like in most of the jobs in America. As technology keeps on progressing, the need of unskilled workers may become unneeded in jobs such as Apple and others. However this shows more promise for skill workers because the machines are going to need monitoring and maintenance which only skilled workers can do. “That will replace most of the workers, though you will need a few people to manage the robots (Mr. Enderle).”

ReplyDeleteOne company I invested in, in my project was Disney. I first invested in it because it seemed to be on a low, it has risen every year for five years and it is a well-known company. Later I found out that isn’t quite enough to make a safe investment but too my benefit Disney stock had a good week and rose almost everyday this week. I searched in order to find out why and I found this article “Disney Rises on 'Infinity' Interactive Game Potential” by Julia Boorstin, which talks about the rise Disney had this week. I know this article is credible because it was written in CNBC, which “is the recognized world leader in business news”, it was also written by Julia Boorstin who is CNBC's media and entertainment reporter. This article states that Disney rise was mainly due to the unveiling of Disney’s new game platform called infinity. The stock apparently went up by a percent on Tuesday, which is when I first acquired stocks in Disney in the game and went up by more than one percent on Wednesday and through the game I know it rose on Friday as well. In hindsight I should have bought a larger amount of its stocks when I first did the trade it would’ve lead me to have major gains unfortunately I believed it would be safer to only buy 14. So even though I benefited from Disney stock rise I could’ve benefited further. The platform is yet to be released which is why it states the rise is “thanks to optimism about the potential of the "Disney Infinity" game platform”. This optimism might be because this game platform shows “Disney is departing from its historical resistance to mash up Pixar and Disney characters because of the potential in the action figure/video game combo”. We are still not quite sure if the game platform will be a success when it comes to sells but the idea of it sure has helped Disney’s stocks. But if Activson’s Skylanders (which is as well a collaboration of Disney and Pixar) is any indicator they should have a huge revenue especially since infinitely will have well known characters unlike Skylander which were completely unknown. My investment might have been a bit naïve but it showed me that in fact this was a good investment.

ReplyDeleteSince the 2nd quarter reports have came out I've been interested in seeing who were the big gainers in these weeks. When company I saw was called Vulcan Materials Co or VMC in the NYSE. I check out their quote and they had a good week so far with a 7.51% positive change in the past 5 days. For the most part this company makes materials used to build highways and concrete walkways. They also make materials to build houses which we can also see the housing market making a comeback from lows suffered back in 08’, low interest rates and increase in rentals has contributed to the housing market comeback and thus helping Vulcan Materials company out because these materials are typically used for construction and doesn't really have a competitor except according to an article in Zacks.com.
ReplyDeleteThe sources I used to help me find the information came from money.ccn.com that tought me about the hot stocks right now.Money.Cnn.com attract 10.8 million unique visitors per month so they have a respectable amount of visitors.Zacks.com was founded in 1977 and is research firm that is based in Chicago and is considered to have the best investers reporting to thier company.
I believe right now that I would invest some of my money into this company they surpass their quarter report and with warmer weather can be more favorable for contractors to build homes.Their five year reports tooks a hit in 2011 and 2012 with not as much profit as past year but it looks like its in the ups right now and hopefully with this information they should be going up.With 7 analysts projecting a range of increases over the 12 months and a median showing a increase it look like it is a smart look for its stockholders.
